The argument to go to Mars
Astrophysicists and astronomers are obsessed with Mars. There is always news about the red planet. In fact, society wants to cut some of our money and actually go there, but is it really worth it? Neil Tyson deGrasse believes so, but on the other hand, Gregg Easterbrook disagrees.
So, why shouldn’t we go to Mars? Gregg says it would cost a great amount of money, and a stronger version of technology for humans to go to Mars. He clarifies that sending people to Mars would cost as much as building 800 new Hoover Dams and society would have to cut benefits, health care, education. Going to Mars would have to be put on hold until humanity can improve technology and until that, Mars will still be there.
Why go to Mars? Neil deGrasse Tyson justifies a colonization of Mars, because Mars has a 24-hour day, polar ice caps, and a tilted axis that is compared with its orbit, that means Mars goes through seasons. In addition, we’re using all our resources on earth, and mars is the most inhabitable planet we’ll eventually have to move there.
In the end, Neil Tyson deGrasse is right. We’re going to have to move somewhere eventually, and Mars is the closest planet that is similar to earth. We’re using all our resources on earth, and we’ll need to find more somewhere.
Colonizing Mars is going to take some tremendous effort, but it will be worth it. We’ve already built an international space station in orbit around our atmosphere; we’ve landed astronauts on the moon, we also successfully landed a rover on Mars. If we can do all this, then we can build our way to Mars too. It’s going to take a while to colonize Mars, but first we need to improve our technology and start planning now.

Dangerous Drugs by Jillian (Grade 8)
Drugs have their benefits for people who are in need of them, but they can also destroy people's life depending on the person’s body, how often they’ve been using them, and how long they have been addicted. More than 22 million Americans ages 12 and older, almost 9% of the U.S population, uses illegal drugs, and some drugs can be devastating for users. Drugs like heroin, krokodil, and meth may even rot the users bodies, and those who choose to abuse drugs will find the addiction tough to quit. Even after just one dose of illicit drugs can be addicting and can change the body and brain forever. The center for disease control claims that 105 people die everyday from drug overdose. ("Results from...”).
One common and illicit drug is meth, also known as “Methamphetamine”. Meth contains many hazardous toxins such as acetone, lithium, toluene, hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, pseudoephedrine, red phosphorus, and anhydrous ammonia. Those poisonous ingredients are mostly household items, and can cause irreparable damage. While on meth, people can hallucinate, and hear things that aren’t there. Users sometimes think that they have “crank bugs” under their skin, which makes them pick their skin and causing terrible wounds. ("Meth Sores,…)
Krokodil is similar to meth, but amazingly some consider it to be worse. Krokodil contains gasoline, iodine, codeine, paint thinner, lighter fluid, and industrial cleaning oil. Death rates are high among users. Horrifically, addicts have a life expectancy of less than a year, doctors have warned. ("Krokodil, The Flesh-Eating…) With the first injection, Krokodil causes an ulcer, or soft tissues damage, at the site of injection. Damaged tissues develop infections and swell, cutting off the flow of blood and causing tissues to die and rot. ("Krokodil: Effects of…)
Heroin, another very addictive drug, is a narcotic that restricts the central nervous system from working properly. Heroin can be used by snorting, injecting, or smoking. Users who inject heroin will feel an overwhelming “rush” as it is often called. Their mouths may become dry, and they may begin to twitch; their arms and legs will feel heavy and rubbery. They may experience a reduced emotional capacity and clouded emotions. The effects of heroin lasts three to four hours after each dose has been taken. Health risks when using heroin include fatal overdose, high risk of infection, HIV/AIDS, collapsed veins, infection of the heart lining and valves, and liver disease (Sabella).
Yet another hazardous drug is cocaine. Cocaine is also known as, “candy”, “coke”, or “snow”. Powder cocaine is a hydrochloride salt derived from processed extracts of the leaves of a coca plant. “Crack” Cocaine, can be snorted, smoked, or injected. This high priced drug, stays in the user’s bodies for three days, and can change how people look. Common side effects include increased heart rate and blood pressure, but seizures, cardiac arrest and even death are real dangers as well. Using cocaine even once is bad, and the more a person uses, the worse the effects are on your brain and body. ("DRUG FACTS…").
Harmful drugs can ruin peoples’ lives; cause irreparable damage, and can lead to death. Krokodil, meth, heroin, and cocaine can strip valuable days from the user’s life, days that they could have spent more wisely. The more knowledge one gains, the less pressure one feels to use these ridiculous drugs. I hope users make a smart decision and stay away from these and any other dangerously addictive drugs.

About the Queen by Jillian (7th grade)
My name is Jillian Nadine, and I live in Pilot Point, Alaska. I am twelve years young (bound to be thirteen in May), I go to Pilot Point School, and I’m in 7th grade. I’ve lived in Pilot Point my whole life, and I’ve been back and forth between here and another village named Port Heiden. I like villages better than cities because they are quieter, and it’s less crowded here.
I have one sister, three brothers, and two extraordinary parents that mean the world to me. I also have many great friends. My best friends are Danielle, Jake, Monica, and Nickolis; they’re like my brothers and sisters. I love them because like real friends should be they’re there for me.
Even though I live in a village, I like to dress nice. I listen to rap, hip-hop, and hard rock. I like many different artists from many genres, but my favorites for rap are Mac Miller . and Machine Gun Kelly. I like the color purple, and green, plus orange. I like to draw, but I get distracted easily. I’ve been working hard in school lately, but sometimes I like to be lazy. My favorite things to do are: Going for rides on Hondas, playing zombies, texting, and checking my email. I am very photogenic, energetic, and poetic.
When I get older I want to be a model, and be a photographer. I also want to go to college to study photography, and I want to travel to many places like Louisiana and Disneyland. I believe in God, and many other things. People, call me crazy and weird, but that’s how I like it.

Places We Go By
Jillian Matson
It was one quiet day in Port Heiden, Danielle and I were riding around in her truck looking for bears. While we were riding, we decided to go to the old village, which is part of the main village.
“Dani, want to go look around in the old houses?” I asked.
“Sure,” Danielle replied.
We arrived at the Old Village, and as I stepped out of the truck, I saw this dusty, fuzzy thing right beside me on the ground.
“Look Dani!” I shouted.
“What is it?” She asked.
“I think it’s a magic carpet! Want to try it out?”
“A carpet, you believe in that stuff?” She said sarcastically.
“Yes, I do, do you want to know how I know?” I said.
“How do you know?” She said.
“Because, I’ve rode on one before, it was quite awesome.”
“Oh, well that helps, “(She laughed)” and where did you ride on a carpet?”
“Well, I was in Puerto Rico and found a carpet, then rode it,” I explained plainly.
“Oh I see.”
“Yes, you know now, so let’s go for a ride!”
“Fine, I’ll trust you this time.” Danielle said.
“Darn, I forgot how to activate these things.” I said.
“Wait, what?” Danielle asked.
“Up up and away!” I said, hoping it would work, but it didn’t.
“Go up you stupid, dumb carpet,” I said angrily.
“Up magic carpet”
Off we went, Danielle was scared and holding on for dear life. Danielle grabbed my sweater and was too scared to let go of me, and on the other side I was having fun driving it. Danielle was still getting used to it. On a carpet you have to have balance and good steering skills.
“How do you drive this dumb thing?” Danielle asked.
“Don’t call it dumb! It might crash on us! You have to be nice to it, I just figured that out.”
“Oh well, can I drive?”
I laughed. “No you cannot!”
“K!’’
As we were riding around, we could se everyone below us, looking at us like we were crazy. We landed safely on the ground, and everyone was crowded around Danielle and I wanting to come with us. Danielle and I made it a business to transport people on our carpet for money. We were traveling with some passengers, and we were just about to land in New Zealand. The passenger was so excited to be there.
“Thank you, so much! I am so excited. How much do I pay you?” The passenger asked.
“About 2,500.”
“Isn’t that a little bit too much?”
“No,” I said angrily.
“Alright, here’s the money.”
“Thank you for flying with Danielle and Jillian’s Taxi!”
After flying to New Zealand, Danielle and I decided to choose one place we each wanted to go to, I decided to go to Cleveland, Ohio. I spent a week there and went off to Hawaii where Danielle wanted to go; we spent a week there, and went back to Port Heiden to wait for calls for people who wanted to make reservations.
“I’ve had fun so far, I’m glad I met so many people.” Danielle said happily.
“Me too, I can’t wait for Wednesday to come!”
“Why? What are we doing?”
“Well I was planning to go to the biggest water park in the U.S. Do you want to come?”
“Sure, I will.”
“Alright.”
As we were talking about new places to go, I got a phone call.
“Hello,” I answered.
“Yes, Is this Jillian Baker?”
“Yes it is, may I ask who’s calling please, and what for?”
“Well, congratulations! You have been accepted into Harvard University!”
“No way!” I shouted.
“You can come anytime, we’ll give you two months to get here. Is that okay with you?”
“Well, I’m not sure, because I’m a pilot for a flying a carpet company. We fly clients around the world,” I chuckled.
“That is awesome,” the Harvard representative said.
“ I know right! But, may I get the Harvard number and call you back?” I asked.
“Yes, it’s 1-306-831-4299,”
“Alright thank you.”
“Bye.”
I hung up and was excited to tell Danielle the great news, but I wasn’t sure how she would react. Danielle looked at me with a confused look on her face.
“Who was that? Tell me the details.” Danielle asked.
“That was the Harvard Manager, he just told me that I was accepted.”
“I’m happy for you!” Danielle said with excitement.
“Thank you! But, he gave me two months to get to campus, so if I leave, do you want to take care of the carpet?” I asked sadly.
“Yes, I will. You will promise to visit me?” Danielle asked.
“Of course, why wouldn’t I?”
“I don’t know because you’re going to the toughest school to get into! But I’m proud of you.” Danielle said.
“Thank you Dani, I’ll come see you on the holidays, that’s a no doubt.” I said with a smile.
“Okay, I guess this is goodbye. Bye best friend.” She said with a sad face.
“Bye bye,” I cried.
I had left to get an education, and started following my dreams. Danielle wanted to be an official flight attendant, so we both decided to put the carpet in a safe place, where we can fly it later, and Dani and I went to go follow our dreams and come back to our business later.

Cause's of the Revolutionary War.
By Jillian (Grade 7) January 10, 2013
The Revolutionary War was a long, tiring war, but the colonists won so we could have freedom. The British were treating the colonist unfairly. The Stamp Act, the Sugar Act, the Tea Act, and the Intolerable Acts were all laws that the colonists didn’t like. In addition, the British didn’t let the colonist have representation in their government, and the soldiers were violent towards the colonists. The colonists were mad, so they went to war.
In 1765, the British needed more money because they were using all the British’s money around the world. So, the British placed a new tax on printed materials in the American colonies. They had to buy a stamp and put it on documents, newspapers, and even playing cards to show that they bought it. This new law was called the Stamp Act. In response, the colonists formed a diplomatic body called the Stamp Act Congress, which wrote a letter complaining to the king. The British government revoked the Stamp Act in the year 1766.
The British imported many goods, like paper, wool, tea, lead, and paint. Charles Townshend passed new tax laws on these materials, but these laws also made the colonists angry. British leaders hoped that the colonists would agree to pay these tariffs, but the colonists disagreed.
The Tea Act however was the first act that made people react violently. The Tea Act was a law passed by the Parliament, which forced the Colonists to the buy tea only from the East India Company, and Colonists would still have to pay the taxes on tea. On December 16, 1773, Colonists boarded British ships in the Boston Harbor and threw off their cargo of tea into the water. After that, the event was called the Boston Tea Party.
In the year 1770, the British government sent soldiers to Massachusetts. These soldiers did many things that upset the colonists. First, the soldiers fired into a crowd of protesting colonists, killing five men; that event was named The Boston Massacre. Then, soldiers closed the Boston Harbor. Finally, the British troops forced the colonists to lodge soldiers in their houses. The British troops weren’t polite to the colonist, and colonists were furious.
The Revolutionary War started in April 1775, and colonists wrote the Declaration of Independence in the year 1776. The war went on for 8 years, and ended in 1783 when the Treaty of Paris was signed. Britain approved that the United States was a free country.

Ellis Island.
By Jillian Matson 5/16/13
“Christina!” Mother yelled.
“What?” I moaned back.
“You need to get ready for your sailing trip to Ellis Island, so get up and get ready!”
“Alright, I’m up!” I yelled in a tired voice. As I got up, I got blurry eyed for a second. I peeked out the window, and my mother was standing outside waiting for me. So, I got dressed, grabbed a bottle of water, and left off to my biggest journey.
After walking the long miles, mom and I were exhausted.
“We’re almost there.” Mother said.
“Can’t wait.”
There were only a few steps to go before I would leave on the ship. Mother and I were so proud. We took our first steps onto the boat, and I was discovering that the ship was ancient. On the inside it was big, and it had a dinner area. It was like nothing I’ve ever seen before, but the worst thing was that I only had thirty dollars. I was happy to be here, but I didn’t have much cash. I asked the manager where we would stay, and he directed us to a nice room. After the first night on the ship, I awoke and my mom got me some food. When I was done eating, I got dressed and went to go check out the dinner area and it was packed with food. Although, I wasn’t hungry, so I got my mom food then she was delighted.
“Thank you,” My mother Darcy said.
“Your welcome,” I said with a smile.
Later after noon, I went to ask the manager. “How long are we going to be on here?”
“Well, it will take two months.” He said.
“Oh, that’s a long time.”
After asking the question, I was thinking about my home in Italy and how long I was going to be gone. I predicted it wouldn’t be too long. I will miss riding my horses and visiting my grandma. It was 5 o’clock, and I was about to take a nap after thinking about my future. Still being on this long cruise is tiring. I’ve done everything there is to do, but mother seems to be having a good time talking to other passengers. At midnight, I ate some snacks and went to bed. I awoke at the crack of dawn, and my eyes were dry. I peered out the window and saw a figure in the distance. Mother was sleeping, so I woke her up and was curious to find out what the figure was.
“Oh my, this is amazing Christina! Look we’re going to finally arrive at Ellis Island!” Mother shouted.
“Yay!”
I gazed at the figure and discovered it was the Statue of Liberty. I was excited to finally be here. My heart was pounding, and then I saw my mom packing and rushing. I walked out of the room, and I saw everyone in a corner looking at the Statue of Liberty. They were overwhelmed with joy. The ship stopped, and I quickly walked off with my mom. We were so happy to touch land and breathe salt less air. I was relieved to finally be here at Ellis Island. Mother and I decided to go inside of the building, but we were anxious. My palms were sweaty from holding mother’s hand, and I were nervous. We took a step inside and were amazed at how clean and beautiful it was, but I was barely able to breath because there were so many people jammed close to me; it was terrible. As I was taking a few steps on the stairs, the guard looked suspiciously at me and grabbed my arm. I felt uncomfortable and frightened.
But, then he said, “Don’t worry. I’m giving you a check up, and it doesn’t look like your sick. “
“Oh, Thank you.”
“Would you like a guest room?” The guard asked
“Sure.”
After that, he directed me to a nice room, but all I can think about was my mom. I didn’t even know where she was. I walked slowly out and the door and peered out, and I saw my mom being carried outside. My heart felt like it was torn out and ripped into pieces. Tears ran down my face.
“No! Mom don’t leave!” I screamed.
“She’s sick. She cannot pass the stairs if she’s ill,” The guard said firmly.
“Can I talk to her?” I sadly asked
“Yes,” the guard said motioning to the others.
After they had left, I asked mom, “Why are you sick?
“Because Christina, before we left home, I ate a sandwich and found black dots in my food, I’m not sure if it’s poisoning me.”
“Are you going to leave me?” I said tearing up.
“I have to sweetie.”
“Who’s going to take care of me?
“I’m sure you’ll be fine, just be careful of strangers.?”
“Ok, momma.” I paused and started crying
“I love you, mom.”
“I love you too, Christina.’’
“I guess this is bye.”
“Bye my beautiful, I will see you sometime I hope. Love you.”
“Bye mom, I will see you again! Love you!”
That was the end, I said bye to my mom, I cried everyday thinking of her. My journey was never the same without her.

Columbus
By Jillian 10/9/12 (Grade 7)
In the year 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue looking for gold and Asia, but instead he ended up in the West Indies where he mistreated the Native Americans. Every year we celebrate Columbus Day, but all in all he wasn’t actually a hero.
Columbus wanted to find a route to India, but he didn’t have the money so he persuaded the king and queen of Spain to fund his journey. He wanted to go there so he could get rich by selling spice and gold (Zinn, Howard.). He took three ships to America named the Santa Maria, Pinta, and the Nina, but the Santa Maria crashed on the north coast of Hispaniola. Columbus left men there to start a colony while He rushed back to Spain on the Nina. When Columbus reached Spain he was welcome back as a hero. Columbus made 4 journeys to the New World with as many as 17 ships and with 1500 colonists aboard. ("Columbus, Christopher…”)
Columbus was cruel to the Natives of North America. He made them serve as slaves to dig for gold. He even wore a golden crown, and acted like a king. When Columbus came to North America, he brought a disease called smallpox, and it was very harmful to them. Many enslaved people died because of the disease, and the population decreased from 1,ooo, ooo natives to 1,000 (Zinn, Howard.).
Columbus never stopped exploring in the Caribbean, looking for Asia and Japan. However, when Columbus was sailing, the colonists rebelled against him. He also got stranded on Jamaica, and a later colonist chained him and was sent back to Spain. Columbus’s voyages were not what he expected them to be. Before Columbus died, he had to beg King Ferdinand for his payment, but he didn’t get what he had been promised ("Columbus, Christopher…”).
After Columbus’s voyages, few people liked him. Many people in Europe ostracized him because he didn’t bring back very much gold, and he failed to make it to India. People today still don’t like Columbus, because of what he did to the Native Americans. But after all of his journeys, he didn’t seem like much of a hero.

BEARS AND MICE by Jill (6th grade)
Bears are cute and mice are disgusting. Bears and mice have some physical similarities, but their size is very different. In addition, bears and mice eat similar foods, and they hunt and hibernate. While Bears and mice are different, they have some things in common.
Bears and mice look different, but they are both mammals, which means that they breast feed their young. The bear family is ten times larger than the rodent family. bears have thick fur, sharp teeth, and pointy claws and mice have sharp teeth not much of a thick fur and a little bit of sharp claws. Mice are about four inches long and bears are about 1 1/4 inches long. Bears and Mice can be all the same colors: Black, Brown, and White. Mice have about thirty-eight species, and Bears have up to about eight species. Mice and bears are both omnivore. Bears and mice mate in the fall, hibernate in the winter
Bears and mice hunt for food for their young and for themselves. If a bear saw a fish in the water, it would sneak up on it and grab it. Mice usually eat bugs and worms, but sometimes they chew there way into houses and eat house food. Similarly, bears often dig in trash bins, and get litter everywhere. Mice can climb well with their claws; if they’re scared, they well climb up trees. Black bears can climb up trees in the same way with their hooked claws. Interestingly, both animals are very dangerous. Bears can maim or kill people with their claws, but mice can spread diseases and illnesses that can kill people.
Bears give birth to two or three babies while mice give birth to thirty or forty babies. Both mice and bears breastfeed their young. Bears hibernate all winter long while Mice stay in a little den. Bears live in a big cave in the winter. Although house and pet mice do not hibernate in the winter, wild mice do hibernate through the cold season. Bears travel to get food for their young. Mice also leave their den get food for their young.
While bears and mice are both mammals, they look different—especially because bears are bigger than mice—, yet they have similar habits, like digging in the trash. Mice and bears are both omnivores, and they hibernate in the winter. In conclusion, bears are different than mice in many ways, but they are both dangerous and glorious creatures. People may revere or despise the mouse and the bear, but everyone would agree that they are both amazing.
