Shiver Analysis - Monica Etuckmelra - 12th Grade
The novel Shiver, by Maggie Stiefvater is set in modern day Duluth, Minnesota. The book has two main characters, Grace (a human girl) and Sam (a werewolf), who both have to continually fight to be with each other, and will always protect one another.
When Grace was young, Sam, “her guardian angel”, saved her from being killed by the wolves that attacked her. She saw the yellow-eyed wolf, and fell completely in love. Grace has spent years watching wolves behind her house, particularly the yellow-eyed werewolf. “Her wolf” has always been they’re watching her back. For Sam, he has always known two sides to his life. The wolf’s side, where he is always watching and never speaking to the girl he has always protected, and the human side, where he never dared to speak with her in fear she might recognize his eyes. They both knew if something ever happened to one another, they would do absolutely anything for each other, because they soon realized how much they loved and cared for another. Sam must fight to be human, and Grace has to fight to be with him. They both fought for things that they thought they could never have, until one day their fighting pays off.
The first obstacle Grace overcame is making the choice to help Sam. Sam endangered himself by hanging around her backyard when hunters were out. The hunters were looking for wolves that attacked a local student. When Sam got shot, he immediately turned into a human, but that shouldn’t have happened until spring when it was warmer. When Grace found Sam in her backyard shivering from the cold, Grace recognized Sam without even seeing his eyes from “her wolf”. “His beautiful ruff was gone and he was naked, but I knew it was my wolf even before he opened his eyes. His pale yellow eyes, so familiar, flicked open at the sound of my approach, but he didn’t move.” (p. 60) Grace didn’t hesitate to take the chance to help the wolf she has always watched. “Without thinking, I grabbed him under his armpits and dragged him far enough inside that I could shut the door.” (p. 61) Taking the risk of helping Sam was dangerous but was good for their relationship. If Grace hadn’t helped him, Sam would have died, they wouldn’t have fallen in love with each other, they wouldn’t have had the same drive in either of their lives, and they wouldn’t have eventually found the cure. Both Sam and Grace sacrificed in some ways, Sam risked his secret, and Grace took on his secret and gave up her safety. Grace even endangered a friend’s mom’s career by asking her for medical supplies from the clinic she worked at to help Sam.
The second problem Sam and Grace both have to deal with is to convince the people around their lives that they are stable and ready for the relationship. Grace’s parents weren’t sure if Sam was treating her respectable. They kept their eye on them both and continued questioning them. The other members of the pack that Sam belongs to aren’t very approving of a human knowing their secret about being a wolf. When the wolves are in their human form, and it gets cold out. They turn into a wolf. It was getting so cold out that Sam was afraid he would turn into a wolf. So he wore multiple layers of clothing, so he could keep his body heat in. He wore sweaters and coats, but it got even colder outside. One cold morning, they were driving towards the wolf pack’s house when they crashed, and the heater in the car wouldn’t start. It grew very cold inside, and they couldn’t do anything about it. He couldn’t stand the cold anymore, so he ran into the woods to change into a wolf; Grace couldn’t do anything about it. Once Grace arrived home, she fought with her parents, because they thought Sam abandoned Grace, but it wasn’t like that. She had to act like it wasn’t a big deal, so her parents won’t worry about her.
The third obstacle Grace and Sam overcame was Sam’s ability to change into a wolf. When Sam gets cold, he becomes a wolf, and it becomes harder for Sam and Grace to work together. “He blinked. ‘Oh. Because it’s spring. Because it’s warm. Warm makes me me. Makes me Sam.’ ” (p. 67) Even though Sam and Grace have to go through so many difficulties, they knew from the beginning that there would be an overwhelming struggle against many complications in order to always be with one another, they would have to find a cure, because Sam doesn’t have a lot of time until he’s a werewolf and will never be able to turn back into a human. They kept fighting until they knew they found the answer. When the members of the pack found out that she was bitten, and didn’t turn into a wolf. The pack was very confused about her not turning into a wolf, and very interested in it. If she hadn’t turned into a werewolf, then it must have been the cure. The entire pack asked Grace if anything happened right after she was bitten. Grace told the whole pack that one really hot day; she was forgotten in the car, while her dad was shopping. It was so hot outside, the inside of the car was over 104oF, and she should have died from this exposure. Soon after that incident she got sick, and then eventually got better. When she was sick, that was the time when she was supposed to turn. Since she didn’t turn, they figured that getting a fever would cure being a werewolf. They had to figure out how to cause a fever, which led them to meningitis. Grace is planning on figuring out how to get meningitis into Sam’s system so he can be cured. Grace’s friend’s mom works at a clinic, and Grace’s friend told her that there was a patient there that has meningitis. Her friend drew blood from the person that has meningitis, so Grace can inject the blood from the person that has meningitis into Sam. The pack of werewolves argued with Grace that he was never going to turn back into a human, and that it would be better to inject him with the blood when Sam was a human. She didn’t care she just wanted to try. But, she could never find him, he never showed up at her house anymore. Grace continued to talk with the complete pack to see if any of them saw him. They hadn’t, but they could probably find a way to lure him by the house where the full pack lives, at the packs leaders home. They made a burger, put Benadryl into the burger, put it outside, then waited until he came. He came an hour later, ate the burger and slowly fell asleep. The whole pack and Grace brought Sam inside, and then injected him with the blood. The entire pack and Grace brought him back outside and waited for him to wake up and leave. When he did, Grace felt some hope in her; she waited two weeks before she saw him again. She didn’t think it worked. She was always looking; she never stopped thinking about him. Grace didn’t stop looking for Sam, and he never stopped thinking about her. They both knew if they had to fight to be together, they would. One day, when Grace was looking, Sam arrived on her back yard porch, as a human. Grace was reassured that everything would be okay and that they would continuously fight for each other. They continued to live the happy lives that they’ve both wanted. But, when the loved ones around them don’t approve of the relationship, they have to prove more to each other and others around them that they are serious and won’t give up on each other. Grace and Sam will always fight for each other. No matter how much either would have to give up. Grace’s mom convinced her dad that they are a good couple and that they will never be apart. The wolves pack are finally comfortable with Grace knowing their secret because they helped Sam and she was supposed to turn into a wolf.
In conclusion, Sam and Grace are very insecure about how to react to each other’s company. Since watching each other for eight years, they are somewhat comfortable together. But, after spending more time with each other with Sam a human they feel like they had a stronger connection than they knew. Which is why Sam and Grace have fought harder, which drove them harder to find it. Which is why they will always have the same strong connection to each other, like the way they did from the very beginning.

Renaissance
The Renaissance had a vast influence on the culture in the 14th through the 17th centuries. The most significant cultural changes during this time occurred in the areas of art, literature, and the science. Art had changed dramatically due to new curiosity in different genres of Art. The literature developed into a more vital subject for the average person, particularly because the printing press made it much simpler to make books and to share new ideas or beliefs others had about science.
[1]Art became more involved in reality and became less focused on religion. The art during those days changed affectedly during the 1400’s. Many artists became more interested in painting nude people or objects with each new painting, also became more realistic. The rulers of Florence, the Medici family, had spent great expanses to have artists create pictures, statues, and buildings. Leonardo Da Vinci who was a painter, sculptor, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer. Painted two of the world’s most famous works: the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper.
[2]The printing press was invented in about 1450 by a German named Johannes Guttenberg, which allowed people to make many copies of one book. Printed books became more widespread throughout the world, which made literature more popular. Making a book without the printing press was a very long process, which is why there weren’t many books until it was created. Although the printing press was invented in 1450, people still didn’t hear about it until later on when the printing press became more accepted throughout Europe. Due to the fact, that it made documenting science discoveries simpler.
[3]After reading about science in books, people began experimenting for themselves. A medical doctor around that time was Andreas Vesalius, who dissected dead bodies. Astronomer, Nicolaus Copernicus, showed that the earth revolves around the sun. One thousand years before that, people believed that the sun had revolved around the earth. Science during the Renaissance had many new and shocking ideas. After studying and documenting all they learned, everyone saw how the body works, and how many of the reasons why the earth can sustain life on the planet.
The art during the renaissance changed the way we as people look at items or architecture. The literature opened our eyes because there were many more genres to choose from. The science has taught us how the body functions, and how the earth has changed throughout the years. The renaissance made a big difference to how we view things today. Without events that occurred during the renaissance, reading probably wouldn’t be as popular many science discoveries wouldn’t be discovered until later on. The renaissance was a massive impact on our views of religion, art, and the world.
