Declaring War: FDR v. GWB By: Michael
An essay by: Michael
Pearl Harbor and the attack of 9-11 were two of the deadliest attacks that America has ever withstood. The day after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed the nation. In the same way, George W. Bush addressed the nation a few hours after the 9/11 acts of terror.
There are many similarities between the two speeches. President Bush somberly talked about the lost lives of many Americans when he said, “The victims were in airplanes, or in their offices; secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers; moms and dads, friends and neighbors. Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror.” FDR also spoke about the many lives lost during the surprise attack against Pearl Harbor: “The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost.” Both Presidents informed the nation about tragically lost lives in the brutal attacks. A day after Pearl Harbor, FDR began his speech with these famous lines: “Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” This was Franklin’s motivation to all the military that was going to the war. Also, the 9-11 attack was actually a series of attacks, while the Pearl Harbor attack was the only one; however Pearl Harbor was just the first that happened that night. Thus, President Bush exclaimed, “our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts,” (italics added) but FDR said,
“Yesterday the Japanese Government also launched an attack against Malaya.
Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.
Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam.
Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.
Last night the Japanese attacked Wake Island. And this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island.”
Both presidents told of multiple attacks by evil men.
George W. Bush on the other hand stated, “Our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. The victims were in airplanes, or in their offices; secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers; moms and dads, friends and neighbors. Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror”, after this speech President Bush desired the need to find the terrorist who premeditated this attack.
One of the contrast between the two events and speeches was that 9-11 was only thirteen years ago, while Pearl Harbor was over several decades ago. Both were surprise attacks against the U.S. 9-11 was executed by terrorists, while Pearl Harbor was performed by Japan air and naval forces. FDR knew exactly where to find the people who attacked Pearl Harbor, but George Bush didn’t know how to find Osama Bin Laden who was thought to have planned the attack.
Both presidents talked solemnly about similar themes. When 9-11 happened, President Bush essentially said that 9-11 was a deadly terrorist act, but our first priority was to help those who were in need and secondly to find the terrorists who instigated this evil act. Then we will unite in our resolve for justice and peace. FDR similarly said, “Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive … with confidence in our armed forces—with the unbounding determination of our people—we will gain the inevitable triumph, so help us God.” After the evil, horrible attacks, our nation’s presidents promised retaliation and conquer our enemies.
Both speeches had very similar themes, and had much more in common than in difference. The aftermath of both speeches included confidence, honor, and a feeling of invincibility throughout our nation. FDR and George W. Bush both fortified the military and the nation to stand against any force that opposes our freedom.

Pilot Point, Alaska:
A Descriptive Essay by:
Michael Etuckmelra 8th Grade
Springtime in Pilot Point, Alaska is subtle and quiet. I can smell the grass and flowers ready to bloom, and it is slowly getting warmer outside; I can even feel it in the air on my skin. I see more and more birds flying back from their migration after a long, cold winter in here. The bears and squirrels are waking out of hibernation after a long winters nap. The snow is melting away into mud, making puddles for little kids to hop around in, but as the sun spends more time in the sky, the puddles begins to evaporate until there is only a faint ring where there used to be muddy water.
The summer smells like freshly caught, shimmering salmon at the wide creek at the edge of town. It’s the smell of flowers that are fully bloomed, and meat simmering on the grill. It feels like mosquitos poking me with their long and penetrating proboscis. The sun fries my skin, until I am forced to jump into a cold, yet refreshing lake to cool down my heat-exhausted body. Getting on my Honda and taking long rides, is also a remedy to cool myself down from the battery of the fierce sun. All the while, fishermen are here for the gold called salmon that will become their summer savings for the next nine months to come. After two months of sizzling days, it gets cooler as the earth begins to tilt away from the sun, and the sun spends less time in the sky.
Autumn is the cool, dry time when bears and squirrels stock up on food for the return of the long, lethargic winter. The exhausted fishermen are leaving with their boats and paychecks; although some leave with little to nothing. Hunting for moose and geese is in season and villagers are out to get their meat for the long and dark winter to come. The leaves are turning yellow, red, and orange. As clean up all the trash outside, so that there isn’t any dirty trash left lying around in the spring. The puddles are becoming the solid state of water, also known as ice, which little kids immediately break when the puddles freeze over. Everything outside grows freezing colder and slower.
Winter is immobilizingly cold here. My nose hair glues to the inside of my nostrils and my snot free flows down my numb lips that can’t tell the difference. The kids will be going down hillsides on their sleds in their marshmallow layering of clothing. The lakes are frozen enough to go ice fishing close to a neighboring village. It smells dead, scentless. Outside is completely white with ice particles that fell from the sky in misshapen piles beside the road, and all of the bushes are blank. In the mornings, I slip and slide across the ice while walking to the school bus, but after a few months of darkness and the bitter cold, the familiar scent of grass of and early flowers returns, and it starts all over again with spring.
My family’s two-story, four-bedroom house survives through all these changes. My house is located on a hill near a small lake in the middle of Main Street. Some people think it is just a place to visit, but it feels like home to me. It smells comforting as you walk in the door. It tastes like spaghetti and meatballs just off of the stove, with corn and green beans concocted for an amazing eat. There are my brothers and sisters that all have fun with each other, playing with one another, and arguing, but that is what they are supposed to do. That is home sweet home all year long. Through the mud, the sun, clouds, and snow, I hope my house will be there for many years to come.

Wild West
by Michael Etuckmelra (Grade 7)
The most important events of the Wild West era that changed American history itself were the Pony Express, the Telegraph, the Transcontinental Railroad, the Indian reservation system, and lastly, the Settlings of the Plains. These events made it easier for the West and the East to communicate.
The Pony Express was founded in 1860 by William Russell, Alexander Majors, and William Waddle. The Pony Express lasted from April 1860 to October 1861. It was comprised of 75 teenagers doing a relay race, back and forth, bringing knapsacks of mail to the next rider to continue the job. The Pony Express started at St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. The trip took about ten days to bring mail from Missouri to California. The Pony Express was important because the riders could bring mail back and forth more quickly than the wagon train.
After only one year, the telegraph replaced the Pony Express. The telegraph was able to send messages by electrical energy over wires using a language called the Morse code. The Morse code uses short and long beeps as code for letters of the alphabet. The American, Atlantic, Pacific, and Western unions made money by connecting wires coast to coast. This was a much faster form of communication than the Pony Express.
The Transcontinental Railroad is a train that ran across the U.S. to bring mail back and forth. Two companies, named the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific, built the railroad. The Union Pacific built West from Omaha, Nebraska. The Central Pacific built East from Sacramento, California. It took the two companies seven years to meet at Promontory Point, Utah. Many workers died during construction. When the railroad was done, it took less time than the wagon train which took three months to cross the continent. The railroad took only ten days to bring mail to each city.
After the railroad was built the U.S. forced the Native Americans to move onto reservation. Many of the Natives didn’t opposed reservation, but some of them liked the idea of moving. Some Indian tribes fought back against the government. The reason this was because, the U.S. killed all but about a thousand buffalo and moved them. The natives needed the buffalo for housing and food. Many natives didn’t like the idea of killing off the buffalo, but it helped many settlers.
In 1862, Congress passed the Homestead Act, and Settlers moved on the plains. The Homestead Act, Congress offered 160 acres of free land to anyone who would farm in the southwest for five years. However, there were many problems for farmers in the southwest: harsh winters, droughts, fires, grasshoppers, and loneliness. Most of the people who immigrated to America did their farming and was given free land.
The Wild West was an exciting time when the American people developed ways to communicate back and forth across the nation. The Pony Express was the first way to communicate; next, the telegraph; and then the Transcontinental Railroad. Unfortunately, the Native American was forced to move when settlers came for the land. For the good and the bad, the Wild West was an important era for the Settlers, Indians, workers, and inventors who were around at this time.

Lyndon Johnson
by Michael Etuckmelra (Grade 7)
Lyndon Baines Johnson, also known as LBJ, became the president two hours after John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald. Before that, LBJ was a soldier in World War II, a member of the House of Represenitives, a Senator for Texas, and the Vice President for John Kennedy (JFK) for three years before JFK was shot and killed in 1963. LBJ served two terms as president where he supported many programs called, the Great Society to help the poor.
His early political career started in World War II, when he was commissioned as an officer in the Naval Reserve. LBJ asked for a combat assignment, but he was assigned to check ships instead. Eventually, he reported to President Franklin Roosevelt about war conditions in the Southwest Pacific. While LBJ made some mistakes, he helped to provide needed war supplies for navy men in the Southwest warfront. During his service, he was awarded the Silver Star, the third highest military medal.
LBJ served in the House of Representatives for Texas from 1937 to 1949. LBJ was also one of the two Senators for Texas from 1948 and 1960; in one election, he won by only 87 votes. LBJ was the Democratic Minority Leader in 1953. That year, Johnson was among favorites to be nominated as a democratic presidential candidate. His only competition was JFK. He formed the Stop Kennedy Coalition to oppose JFK, but John Kennedy asked LBJ to become his vice presidential candidate so JFK could get more votes from the Southern states. LBJ accepted the offer, and they both went on to win the election. After that, he became the Vice President for JFK in 1960. Only a couple of years into being VP, JFK was shot and killed.
Two hours after JFK was shot, Johnson was sworn in as president. The inauguration ceremony took place aboard Air Force One with a Roman Catholic missal, found in Kennedy’s desk. Two weeks after becoming president, LBJ placed a 25% tax on potato starch, dextrin, brandy, and light trucks; this was called the Chicken Tax. The next year Johnson ran for reelection and won by a landslide over Barry M. Goldwater.
As President, the Great Society was Johnson’s governmental assault against poverty. He stopped most European immigrants from gaining entrance to the U.S., and he helped poor children attend school. LBJ also initiated food stamps, Medicare, and Medicaid. LBJ also signed the Civil Rights Act into law to stop racial segregation; this was a very exciting for African-Americans who were being mistreated by white Americans.
Lyndon was also one of the presidents during the Vietnam War. He sent many troops to Vietnam, but he was forced to withdraw 1,000 soldiers from the Gulf of Tonkin. It was a sea battle with the Vietnamese. He either had to go to war and take food away from the needy in the U.S., or not go through with the war and be seen as a coward who would not stand up for democracy. He chose the war. College students protested, and Johnson’s popularity dropped during those years. LBJ considered running for the 1968 presidential election, but he didn’t think he should run for another presidential term.
If LBJ had run for a second elected term as president, he would have died at the end of his term. Lyndon Baines Johnson died at his ranch at 3:39 A.M., January 22, 1973 of a third heart attack. At the time, LBJ was not good in health and had severe heart disease. Lyndon’s secretary called CBS when he died to notify the public. Johnson was buried in his family’s cemetery. The whole world was sad for JFK’s death but, the U.S. had an excellent replacement.

Conjunctivitis (Pink eye)
by Michael Etuckmelra (Grade 7)
In Ghana, West Africa in 1969, there was an outbreak of pink eye, from there it spread worldwide. Some pink eye stays for a few days, others, for a few weeks. There are several types of pink eye, but all of the various types of conjunctivitis can be treated successfully.
There are several types of pink eye, but viral is the most common of the four types. Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, has spread across the globe. Some people get it from a viral infection when they are touched by someone who already has pink eye. During bacterial conjunctivitis, the germs travel from your throat and nose to the eyes. Each of the four types of conjunctivitis are contagious except for allergic and chemical. One can acquire allergic pink eye from the dust and pollen in the air, and chemical pink eye when acidic and alkali substances get into the eye. If someone has pink eye, they should see a doctor and be examined to see if the eye is discolored, has pus coming out, is itchy, or has an excessive amount of water in the eyes. After that, the doctor determines if someone even has it and prescribes the best remedy for the kind of pink eye that the patient has.
If someone contracts pink eye, there are several treatments. For bacterial pinkeye, a person could take antibiotic eye drops or just take antibiotics orally. For chemical pink eye, a wet towel should be put on the eye for 10 to 20 minutes, and the eye should be washed out with water or a saline solution. For viral conjunctivitis, there is no cure for the viral infection form of pink eye, but it will eventually heal. Lastly for allergic pink eye, a patient should take the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication.
There are chemical, viral, allergic, and bacterial forms of conjunctivitis and all are bad. Watery eyes, itchiness, redness, and pus are the obvious and annoying signs of the very contagious condition called pink eye. However, a quick trip to the doctor will almost always lead to an effective treatment to end the pain and get people back to a normal life.

PB & J (Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich)
by Michael Etuckmelra (Grade 7)
An average American eats more than 1,500 pounds of peanut butter before graduating from high school. In my opinion, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (or PB & J) are the best sandwich to have as a snack. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches have only been around for 120 years, are nutritional, and are fast to make.
The peanut butter and jelly sandwich has a long history. Bread and jelly have been around for approximately 1,000 years, but peanut butter was invented in 1890. In the U.S., the average person eats as much as six pounds of peanut butter products each year. No one knows who made the first peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but it had to have happened in the last 120 years, after the discovery of peanut butter. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are common in the U.S. (another stat on the positive side), and only 10% of U.S. households don’t eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. [1]
Not only are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches popular, but they are fast to make. It only takes two minutes to make the sandwich, and it is a very simple process. To make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, all one needs is a plate, butter knives, two pieces of bread, peanut butter, and jelly. First, put the two pieces of bread on the plate. Next, get a scoop of peanut butter and spread the peanut butter on one piece of the bread, and jelly on the other bread. After that, put the two pieces of bread together and you have a sandwich.
Inexplicably, PB & J sandwiches are fast and delicious, but they can be nutritious, too. There are only 300 calories in a PB & J. It would take more than 11 peanut butter sandwiches to gain a pound. Approximately 74% of Americans eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch, 13% for dinner, and 13% for breakfast. Some people also make their own peanut butter, and it is much healthier than store-bought brands like Jif, Skippy, Peter Pan, and Goobers. Peanuts have 30 essential vitamins and minerals, but some of those nutritional values go away when companies add sugars and preservatives to the peanut butter.
In conclusion, I think this sandwich has changed lives, and is the best mini sandwich to have as a snack. From easy and fast to nutritious, the many benefits of the PB & J ensure that this sandwich will not be forgotten. It is, and always will be, the dominant sandwich that looks down on all other weak snack foods.
